Women driving change in sustainable healthcare

Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day recognises the achievements and contributions of women across society. In healthcare and scientific research, women play a crucial role in advancing knowledge, improving patient care and shaping the future of innovation.

Just a few weeks earlier, on 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science also highlighted the essential role women play across research, healthcare, innovation and industry. At ENKORE, these two moments are closely connected: they both remind us that building the future of healthcare requires diverse voices, expertise and leadership.

Across the ENKORE ECOHEALTHCARE project, many women contribute every day to advancing the project’s ambition of making healthcare more sustainable and circular. Clinicians, researchers, engineers, sustainability experts, project managers and industry professionals work together across Europe to rethink how healthcare systems can reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining safety and quality of care.

Earlier this year, ENKORE joined the global celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science through a dedicated awareness campaign highlighting the voices of women within the project. Through a series of reflections and short testimonies, we shared their motivations, the challenges they have faced in their careers and the advice they would give to future generations of women interested in science and health innovation.

These stories reminded us that transforming healthcare is not only about technology or systems  it is also about people. Encouraging diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities is essential to ensure that innovation reflects the needs of society as a whole.

On International Women’s Day, ENKORE celebrates the women across its consortium and the wider healthcare community whose work continues to shape more sustainable, circular and people-centred healthcare systems.

Because building the future of healthcare also means ensuring that women can lead, innovate and create meaningful impact across the entire innovation pathway.
