ENKORE ECOHEALTHCARE visits GreenCycl to Advance Sustainable Waste Management in Healthcare
On 3 July 2025, the ENKORE ECOHEALTHCARE project and GreenCycl came together for a collaborative visit focused on exploring innovative approaches to hospital waste management and end-of-life solutions. The meeting served as a practical step toward advancing circularity in healthcare, highlighting how collaboration between research, industry, and waste management experts can drive real impact.
A Shared Vision for Circularity in Action
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss future strategies for sustainable and efficient waste management within healthcare environments. Participants examined how innovative recycling models and circular supply chains can contribute to reducing environmental impact while maintaining safety and quality standards in hospital settings.
Both ENKORE and GreenCycl share a commitment to transforming the traditional “make–use–dispose” model into a “make–use–reuse” approach—one that promotes resource efficiency and long-term sustainability across the healthcare value chain.
ENKORE ECOHEALTHCARE
This collaboration follows the successful 2nd ENKORE ECOHEALTHCARE Plenary Meeting, held at Leiden University, where more than 50 partners from Europe and the USA came together to reflect on project progress and co-create the next steps toward safer, circular, and sustainable healthcare systems.
The meeting explored five pilot interventions, covering areas such as injection systems, dialysis products, sustainable materials, and recycling initiatives. Cross-cutting discussions focused on healthcare processes, hospital circuits, and patient engagement, linking innovation with the practical realities of care delivery and waste management.
Co-funded by the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI), ENKORE unites an extraordinary community of researchers, healthcare providers, policymakers, and industry leaders working together to embed circularity and sustainability at the core of healthcare innovation.
About GreenCycl
GreenCycl develops circular and innovative waste management solutions tailored for the healthcare sector. Recognising that hospital waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, the company focuses on enabling hospitals and manufacturers to recycle or reuse medical instruments at the end of their life cycle.
Through its pioneering work, GreenCycl promotes a paradigm shift in healthcare—one where sustainability is not an afterthought, but an integral part of product and process design.
GreenCycl also functions as a FiedLab, affiliated to the research line “Sustainable Surgery & Translational Technology”, led by Tim Horeman, Delft University of Technology.
